Participants will learn about pre and post disaster planning as well as how to conduct a critical incident debriefing. Dr. Kathleen Figley has a tremendous amount of experience in both responding to disasters directly as well as training first responders and other service providers on how to lessen the impact of a natural or human caused disaster or critical incident while sustaining services. Some of the numerous events she has assisted with include Hurricane Andrew, 9-11, the 2004 Tsunami and Hurricane Katrina. Dr. Figley will train participants on the critical elements of disaster preparedeness, what to expect after a disaster, how to address the impact of a major incident on advocates and survivors and how to conduct a critical incident debriefing. Co-facilitator Julie Ann Rivers-Cochran will offer her experiences working with domestic violence center staff immediately following major disasters such as Hurricane Katrina. She will explore the importance of leadership during crisis, the role of FCADV in supporting centers after a major incident and how the Administrative Rule's disaster planning requirements impact center policy and procedures. Together, Dr. Figley and Ms. Rivers-Cochran will provide practical knowlede and skills related to the intersection of the impact of major incidents (such as a natural or human caused disaster) and how to sustain services when advocates are directly impacted by the event.
